Institute of Nuclear Power Operations

Membership of WANO is open to all companies that operate electricity producing nuclear power plants and organisations representing nuclear operators. Membership is entirely voluntary. Every single organisation in the world that operates a nuclear electricity generating power plant has chosen to be a member of WANO.

Upon joining WANO, members sign the WANO Charter binding them to support WANO’s mission. Signing the Charter also commits them to strive to improve the safety of their own operations and that of others by exchanging information and sharing operating experience with each other. All members also sign a confidentiality statement, undertaking to respect the confidentiality of member information.

Operators are free to join one or more of WANO’s four regional centres. Membership can be:

§         As an individual operator;

§         Through participation in an operator organisation; or

§         Through another operator that represents a group of operators collectively.

Members pay an annual fee to WANO to fund its activities. The fee is based on a standing charge and plant capacity.

Membership enables an operator to share experiences and practices with other members’ nuclear power plants and to communicate directly with them through participation in WANO’s activities.
